Innovation Workshop Series: Oncology

The Swiss-Korean Innovation Workshop Series aims to connect top researchers, companies and start-ups in Switzerland and Korea. Workshops are organised on a bottom-up needs-based principle on topics with critical mass and great potential for collaboration. Fields are open but technologies should be translatable into practice. The Science & Technology Office of the Swiss Embassy aims to play a bridge by bringing together potential partners from both countries.

The 2nd Workshop was held on July 20th, 2015 at the Embassy of Switzerland in Seoul. The attendees were from Novartis Korea and Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST).

Researchers from UNIST presented their current research on developing new anti-cancer compounds focusing on “Mitochondria targeted Hsp90 Inhibitors.” Along with the introduction to the research, the attendees broadly discussed about global academic-industry R&D collaboration.

This workshop provided an introduction to exciting research on anti-cancer drug development and its delivery method and also discuss new technologies in drug development. Furthermore, the reviews from the industry participants gave invaluable insight to how the researchers can position their research to be more attractive for companies for further development.

True to the target of the workshop series to bridge the gap between industry and research, there was an open discussion on industry-academia collaboration and also the status of drug development in Korea.
